3D Studio Max (name changed to 3DS Max, also sometimes called 3dsm, or just Max) is a 3D modeler developed by Autodesk Media & Entertainment (formerly known as Discreet and Kinetix). It was developed as a successor to 3D Studio for DOS, but for the Win32 platform. Kinetix was later merged with Autodesk's latest acquisition, Discreet Logic. Currently, in its 9th version generation as of August 2006. The original 3D Studio product was created by the Yost Group and published by Autodesk. 3D Studio MAX (the product's original name until release 4 when it was changed to "3ds max" to better comply with Discreet's naming conventions) was also originally created by the Yost Group. Autodesk purchased the product at its second release mark and internalized development entirely over the next two releases.
